About this event

RI Leukemia Cup Regatta Postponed Due to Coronavirus Concerns

The 2020 Rhode Island Leukemia Cup Regatta is postponed until later this year to allow volunteers and supporters time to focus on family, friends, and community during this critical time in dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the Rhode Island Leukemia Cup Regatta committee, and the New York Yacht Club have been closely monitoring the rapidly evolving Coronavirus pandemic. As a health organization, one of LLS’s highest priorities is the well-being of its employees, volunteers, donors, partners, and the patients it serves – especially as many blood cancer patients are immunocompromised.
It has become clear that the 2020 Leukemia Cup Regatta would be very difficult or impossible to host and simultaneously protect the health, safety, and physical/emotional wellbeing of our volunteers and supporters on June 5th and 6th. After careful consideration, LLS staff and our race committee have announced that all Leukemia Cup Regatta public activities will be postponed. We are actively working to find a date later this summer in the Newport area, stay tuned for more information.
“Our primary focus is on the well-being of our volunteers, supporters, their loved ones, and the communities in which we all live,” states LLS New England Chapter’s Executive Director, Laura MacNeill “so the decision to postpone the event is the right thing to do. We will work to find another date because our destination is curing cancer and we will not let COVID-19 stop us.”
Leukemia Cup leadership will host virtual events in the spring to share details with our broader LCR community on how we plan to assist our volunteers and supporters over the coming months and provide details on the rescheduled Regatta events. Details on how to connect to the online event will be shared via Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and e-mails to those on the Leukemia Cup Regatta contact list.
In the meantime, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with blood cancer, LLS has doubled down in its efforts to support patients in need. Not only is LLS continuing to fund lifesaving research as well as virtual and tele-programs and services, but now thanks to the support of some of our partners, we will now be offering COVID-19 Financial Aid to patients affected by the crisis. Learn more about the program HERE.
