2012 Leukemia Cup Regatta in San Diego!
"I don't think it's any exaggeration to say it is a fantastic idea to combine the sport we share with support for the people you care about so much. You hear the word hero a lot in connection with this sport. But to me, it is those who look illness square in the eye and take it on who have my total respect." - Russell Coutts, Four-time America's Cup Champion and 2010 Leukemia Cup VIP Speaker
Welcome to 2012! This year there are even more ways to save lives while participating in your favorite sport! We will be racing PHRF boats on the bay with the first San Diego Leukemia Cup Regatta hosted by the Cortez Racing Association (CRA) on June 9. You can earn great Leukemia Cup Regatta gear and those who raise over $8,500 will be sent for a weekend of sailing with Gary Jobson in New Orleans!
We had a very successful booth at the Sunroad Boat Show in January which was followed by an excellent weather and safety seminar presented by Buoyweather.com hosted by West Marine in February. If you missed these great opportunities to learn more about the Leukemia Cup Regatta and about sailing, we have more great events coming up:
- May 31, West Marine Community Day - Save up for this special event. West Marine will be hosting a party in the parking lot with refreshments, product demos, and more! Plus a percentage of all sales from the day go towards curing blood cancers and supporting blood cancer patients.

The Leukemia Lymphoma Society has made over $814 million in research grants since its founding. As a result of these efforts, 19 of the 39 drugs approved by the FDA over the last decade started out as LLS funded research projects. Of those 19 drugs, 5 have gone on to be approved for the treatment of other cancers including Gleevec which has been described as the "magic bullet" of cancer drugs.
In 2011, we saw the completion of the first successful phase 1 clinical trial of a gene therapy treatment, a research project funded by The Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Patients' own cells were "reprogrammed" to fight cancer cells as though they were viruses or bacteria. Patients reported that they experienced the worst flu of their life for about a week. The subjects have been cancer free for over a year. This treatment has tremendous potential not only for blood cancers, but for a wide spectrum of diseases.
LLS also provides patient support ranging from grants of financial assistance for cancer patients who are having trouble affording their treatments, to connecting new patients with survivors to help them through their treatment.
