10TH ANNUAL ATTAWAY/FEDELE SPIRIT AWARD RECIPIENTS
                                           ~ Mac McKenzie ~
Recipients of this award are chosen for their active involvement in the sailing community as well as to our cause. It is presented in memory of two Charleston sailors, Steve Attaway and Dominic Fedele, who lost their battles with blood cancers. Steve, born and raised in Charleston, sailed all of his life. Dominic, a native of France, came to this country when he was 18 and began sailing as an adult. Both men gave freely of their time & talents in support of the sport they so enjoyed. They never met but sadly their lives paralleled in 2001 when they were both diagnosed with a blood cancer.

Mac began sailing at an early and age and has been active in many one design classes including the Optimist, 420, Laser and  Lightning. He is also active in PHRF racing, sailing on any boat with space. He is a leader on his high school sailing team and teaches sailing in the summer.

Mac first sailed in the Leukemia Cup in 2005 and began actively fundraising in 2006, when fellow sailor David Hewitt was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Initially asking family members for donations, he moved on to family friends and friend's families, friend's parents and grandparents and local businesses. More recently he has reached out to national companies, sailing and non-sailing. His fundraising efforts extend year round. Letters, emails, Facebook pages and face to to face requests have led to raising  $33,000 in the past 5 years.

In addition to fundraising, Mac has pushed his high school teammates to participate in the regatta. Last year they won the Father Kelly Cup.

Mac has been among the top 10 local fundraisers and has qualified for the Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson the past 3 years. Congratulations, Mac!

7TH ANNUAL FATHER KELLY CUP AWARD RECIPIENT
Bishop England High School Sailing Team

The Father Kelly Cup is a perpetual trophy given annually in memory of Monsignor Robert K. Kelly, whose service to both Bishop England High School and the Charleston community touched many lives during his 50 years as a priest. Throughout his life & even during his illness with leukemia, Father Kelly modeled the way we all should strive to live our lives in sporting competition and within our local and world community. To receive the award, one high school sailing team in the Charleston community must exemplify three qualifying team requirements: team sportsmanship throughout the year, team success in the Leukemia Cup Regatta and team charity in raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year, Bishop England High School Sailing Team met all three criteria to receive the 2011 Father Kelly Cup!
