In March, we were thrilled to have Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Steve Benjamin join us at a Commodore's Breakfast, where we hosted yacht club leaders from Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. We kicked off the fundraising season at an event hosted by sailing legend Gary Jobson at the Bristol Yacht Club on April 25. Jobson returned as auctioneer at The Leukemia Cup Regatta's pre-race cocktail party at the New York Yacht Club on June 3. The following afternoon, the Leukemia Cup Regatta welcomed 12 boats from the New York Yacht Club's sonars race to race alongside the other boats and race classes that had entered earlier. Following the race, attendees, sailors and volunteers celebrated at the post-race barbeque and awards ceremony. Honored Skipper Grayson Lautieri assisted in presenting awards to the winning boats and to the top three fundraisers. The top fundraiser, Donald Steiner, raised $25,750, with Scotty Murray raising $20,675 and Matt Regan raising $16,813. We brought this year's event full-circle by presenting Steve Benjamin with the Leukemia Cup Regatta's Ron Carr Memorial Award for his volunteerism and sportsmanship throughout the season. The year wrapped up with a partnership with the Newport International Boat Show and local West Marine retail locations.
We would like to increase the Leukemia Cup Regatta's fundraising efforts and presence in the Narragansett Bay community in 2017 and beyond. For more information about the Leukemia Cup Regatta, please contact Kathy Farrell at 401-854-4418 or Kathryn.Farrell@lls.org.
