Honorary Skipper: Asher McGarrah
Participants in The Leukemia Cup Regatta sail in honor of a local patient whose bravery in fighting blood cancer provides inspiration and motivation.
In November 2009, 4 year old Asher McGarrah was diagnosed with Philadelphia Positive Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a rare form of leukemia in children.
Asher started treatment with Gleevec but began to lose response to the medication in December 2010. He began a clinical trial in January 2011 on Sprycel (disatinib). Asher remains on Sprycel and as of October 2011, was continuing to have a good cytogenic response and the doctor declared him in molecular remission. Asher will remain on the trial until January 2013 and hopes are high that he will continue to respond well to the medication - with his last biopsy hopefully taking place in January 2013.
Asher is now in first grade and has a 13 year old brother named Connor. He loves playing with his friends, LEGOs, and going to the park and beach. He's full of energy and loves being active!
