Harrison is 14 years old and a 9th grader at Jesuit High School in New Orleans. He was diagnosed on March 24, 2011 with Hodgkin?s Lymphoma. Harrison has two younger siblings, Maxwell and Betsy. He enjoys reading and sports, especially basketball.
?Little did I know, on March 24, 2011 when I was taking a high school math quiz, I would be diagnosed with Hodgkin?s lymphoma. Less than 36 hours later, I underwent my first chemotherapy treatment. Although difficult, thankfully, my chemo and radiation treatments lasted only 5 months. Now, I am back at school with my friends and playing on the 9th grade basketball team.?
?On that day I also did not know, for the last 16 years, local sailors have been using their skills and competitive drive to race and raise money for vital blood cancer research. Over the same time period, the cure rate for my diagnosis improve from 40% to about 85-90%. On behalf of all cancer patients, victims, and survivors, THANK YOU to all the sailors and the sailing community. Without your current and past efforts, I may have faced a much more difficult and uncertain medical journey.?

Ryan was diagnosed with Hodgkin?s lymphoma in March 1998. Ryan got involved with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2004 when he saw how the funds from the Leukemia Cup Regatta were impacting cancer research and financial aid. He was sailing the day before he was diagnosed and he?s sailing now.
?Thank you all for supporting the Leukemia Cup Regatta. Without looking very deeply, it may be difficult to see the link between sailing and cancer research. The thread that ties sailing to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is that they are both about the pursuit and celebration of living.?
?As a cancer survivor I benefitted from what was probably decades of drug research, research that has been carried out by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The only reason I can be here telling you this is because somewhere, years ago, someone was asking for support to fund research that makes the battle against cancer possible, and it was research that saved my life.?
?Go sailing this season! Even if it's too rough, wet or cold, or sweltering hot without a single puff of wind to cool the sweat on your face, get out there and remember what an absolute luxury it is to be so miserable. Every second counts.?
- Ryan Finn, 2012 Honored Skipper
