Honoring & Remembering Those We Raise A Sail For In 2010

Every year in regattas across the country, sponsors, donors, captains & crew participate in The Leukemia Cup Regatta to raise funds for life saving research and increased quality of life for patients and their families.  This year the Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta began a new program to honor suvivors and remember those who have lost their lives in the battle against blood cancers.  Championed by longtime committee member and dedicated fundraiser, Stephen Ostrow, The Alan Ostrow Suvivor & Memorial Program was created for such an endeavor as this.  To find out more about this program, please visit our Honored Patient page.

Maryland is the birthplace of The Leukemia Cup Regatta.  Since 1993, sailors across America have been raising more than just a sail to help save the lives of children and adults with blood cancers.  The Maryland Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), in concert with the Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, Maryland, pioneered the concept of competition among boats and crews to raise funds for the fight against leukemia and other blood cancers.  The Annapolis event in 1993 raised $30,000, with the yacht club handling all sailing and water-related logistics, and the Maryland Chapter coordinating all land-based fund raising and event activities.  Forty boats vied for the Leukemia Cup trophy, presented to the crew that raised the most funds.

Enthusiasm for the event spread across the country into other markets after a presentation at LLS's October 1993 Annual Leadership Conference by noted sailing expert and ESPN commentator Gary Jobson.  Jobson serves as the national chairman of The Leukemia Cup Regatta to this day.  Since its inception, Leukemia Cup Regattas throughout the country have raised millions to support the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Today, the Maryland Chapter hosts two Leukemia Cup Regattas and The Leukemia Cup Power Boat Poker Run.  The Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta Series is supported by both the Eastport Yacht Club and the Annapolis Yacht Club and is held every year in early June.  The Leukemia Cup Power Boat Poker Run is supported by the Chesapeake Bay Power boat Association and tours the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in late June.  Finally, the Baltimore Harbor Leukemia Cup Regatta is supported by the Baltimore City Yacht Association and is hailed as the regatta all the tough guys race in the last days of October.

Please check back often for the latest information about The Leukemia Cup Regatta and The Leukemia Cup Power Boat Poker Run in Maryland.  Together we will cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
