Please join us as we lift our sails for the 12th Annual Leukemia Cup Regatta at Carlyle Lake in Illinois on May 25th to May 27th, 2012 benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This long standing event has raised an astounding $400,000 for the Gateway Chapter since its start in 2001. These dollars have funded life saving research, education and support to those battling blood cancers.
For more than 50 years, LLS has worked to change the statistics; that more children die from leukemia than any other cancer and that leukemia strikes 10 times as many adults as children. Every 10 minutes someone dies from blood cancer. We have come a long way; of the 39 new cancer drugs approved by the FDA since 2000, almost half (19) were approved for the treatment of blood cancer patients, 5 of these drugs have now been approved for the treatment of other cancers. However, over 1 million people in the US are living with or are in remission from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma because there is no cure.
In fiscal year 2011, the Gateway Chapter:
-
Contributed $139,200 in financial aid to patients
-
Provided co-pay assistance of more than $1.14 million
-
Served over 5,000 patients and families with financial support, education and support groups
-
Provided school curriculum/orientation for children transitioning back to the classroom in over 530 schools
Thank you so much for joining us in the fight against blood cancers. Together we will sail towards a brighter future!
